You Are A Runner | Self Doubt and The Galloway Method

July 16, 2015 by Lindsay Ingalls 10 Comments

race

When I first decided to take up running I used the Couch to 5K (C25k) program. For those of you who aren’t familiar it is a program that starts of with run/walk intervals and overtime the distance you run becomes more and more until ultimately you can run a 5K in 30 (or so) minutes. The thing was at this time in my life I decided that I wasn’t a true runner unless I could run without stopping. No walk breaks. Period.

Well I ran my first 5K after completing the C25K program and I ran it straight through. I completed my first race with no walking so I just must be a runner now – right? Yes, at least that’s what I thought at the moment. The thing is once I wanted to increase my distance I found myself resorting to walking breaks again. I felt like a failure and downgraded myself to a “wannabe runner” and I felt a bit defeated and unmotivated to continue with running. That’s until I signed up for Disney Half (which I wasn’t able to run – you can read about that here.)

Hotel Running

RunDisney has paired up with Jeff Galloway to create training plans for a variety of levels. The thing that is different about the Galloway Plan is that he promotes a run walk run method. The amount you run and the amount you walk depends on your level so some might do a 30sec/30sec and others will do a lot more running such as 6min/1min intervals. When I started to train for the half I adopted this method and to my surprise I was able to finish a 5k in less time than I had run previously and I felt stronger at the end. At that moment I was sold.

Since 2011 I have been using the Galloway Method and it is working well for me and guess what? I am a runner. I feel like one despite choosing to take walk breaks. You know why? Because taking walk breaks is okay and it actually makes me a stronger and more motivated runner.

I may never run a race without walking or be an elite runner but I am a runner. I run for me. I run for fun. I run to release stress. I run because it gives me joy and I run/walk because it’s what works for me.

Are you a Galloway Runner? Have you ever tried a run/walk plan like Galloway or Couch to 5k/10k?

This post is IN ABSOLUTELY NO WAY sponsored. I came across Galloway on my own and wanted to share this with you because it’s what has worked for me for years.

[Running] Running For Pinot | Oregon Wine Country Half

July 3, 2015 by Lindsay Ingalls 10 Comments

Happy Friday Friends! We are in full race training mode at our house with my 10K this September and Neil has registered for the Oregon Wine Country Half (and I’m totally jealous). This race has been on both of our bucket lists since we moved here in 2013 and this year Neil is going to be crossing it off his bucket list. I’m hoping that next year I’ll be free of running injuries and maybe I’ll be able to cross it off my bucket list as well.

OR Poster LogoThe Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon starts at Stoller Family Estate, offering an idyllic 13.1-mile course that runs through the heart of the Willamette Valley in Yamhill County, winding past a cluster of four American Viticulture Areas and through vineyards and orchards before reaching the beautiful residential area of Lafayette.

Participants rave about the small-town charm, incredible sunrise views, scenic course, great wines, and post-race Wine & Music Festival, presented by Ken Wright Cellars in the heart of Carlton. The Wine + Music Festival will feature over 20 wineries and Lagunitas Brewing Company pouring at the event, along with live music!

The Never Again Run

April 26, 2013 by Lindsay Ingalls 2 Comments

Last weekend I chose not to run my first postpartum race. I had prepared for it and was ready but in the end decided not to. It wasn’t due to lack of preparation or desire but because of the course.

Neil and I had registered for a local Earth Day race back in February with the plan being that he would run the 5 miler and I would run the 5k while pushing Edith in the BOB. Since I am also training for the Hippie Chick Quarter that is Mother’s Day weekend I needed to log some extra training miles so the weekend before the race Neil and I decided to run the Earth Day 5 mile loop. We downloaded the map headed out to the starting point and started our run. 5miler2

The race map showed that both the 5-miler and 5k had the same starting point but broke off shortly after so we headed on our way with the plan of doing the 5-mile route.  Just pass the point where the 5-mile route broke off from the 5k there was a few pretty huge hills that even without the BOB would have been a struggle for me but add the BOB and a baby and it made it at least 5x more challenging.  I said to myself okay no big deal it’s good for you to get these hills in and don’t worry you won’t have to do this ever again.

As I made my way along the course things were going pretty well.  There was a gradual incline which anyone who runs knows that they can be at times even more challenging than one big hill because you honestly don’t know when its going to end. It finally did end though and I met back up with the 5k course and ran along a section that had a nice gradual decline for a bit.  Then we headed through a neighborhood where we were to catch back up to the paved nature paths which would lead us back to the park where we had started.

Just before reaching the path I had taken a short walking break which I am glad I did because when I hit the path I was greeted by a drop off.  Okay not a total drop off but I am talking like steep decline which without the BOB would have been a challenge but with the weight of the BOB pulling me forward I had to use all my strength not to let it pull me head over heels. Once I made it to the end of this drop off all I could think was never again.5miler3

Things didn’t look up much from there either. Unlike the path we started on this one was uneven with lots of cracks in the path.  My legs were already feeling strained from going down the steep hill so every bump, sharp corner and crack in the path made me cringe and say never again over and over. Finally the path smoothed out and I saw Neil who of course asked if I got his text about the hill and of course I didn’t because I hadn’t bothered to check my messages. We both agreed that if that really was the race path that we both had no desire to run it again especially with other people on the path with us.  Honestly, it just didn’t seem safe at all.

After our run I went home and contacted the organizers to ask if we had indeed ran the same course that the race would be the following weekend.  I also told them about our experience on the path and how if that was the correct course that it was not stroller friendly.  In the end I didn’t ever get an answer to whether or not it was the correct course I can only assume that it was based on the map that was up on the race website. The only response we received back was to say that they would be happy to switch us to a different race, which we both did.5miler

Race day came and I have to say that I was pretty bummed that we didn’t end up running.  I had worked hard to get to that point, running 3-4 days per week with Edith in the BOB in preparation but in the end the race course just wasn’t the right fit.  Part of me is glad we did a practice run of the race course before the actual race because it would have been quite the surprise to come up on that spot on the course mid race but I also wish we hadn’t because I really wanted to run a race.

Q: Have you ever ran a race course prior to race day? If yes, did it change your expectations? Have you ever decided not to run a race?

Fitness Friday: Improvement, Races & Sports Bras

October 7, 2011 by Lindsay Ingalls 2 Comments

Improvement

I have made huge improvements in my workouts over the the past 10 days, i.e. I went from zero to 6.6 miles of run/walk and 35 minute workout last week to this week where I have already put in 11 miles of running and walking and I still have three more days! It feels great to be back.  It is crazy how Neil’s accident directly affected my workouts.  The first week after his accident was as stressful time that resulted in little sleep and little time to do much of anything besides try to keep the house in a manageable state, check in on Neil frequently  and stay up on any commitments that I had.  Now things are better and Neil is back to work and slowly getting back to his normal routine.  He sees the neurologist in 11 days and we are hoping for good news and that he will be able to get back to running (and driving- I’m over being a taxi driver).

The next step is for me to get back to the gym.  It’s been a challenge because I’ve been back to running and it has been beautiful out so no desire to run inside and because Neil is only allowed to go for walks and I’m his driver I haven’t been going right after work.  This weekend and until he gets the okay Neil and I are going to go to the gym together after work so I can do some alternative cardio and weights and he can walk on the dreadmill or hangout and read magazines and watch TV.

Races

Okay so we are almost fully back. Neil has 11 more days before he sees the neurologist and (hopefully) gets the okay to go back to running. Since we can no longer do the Disney Half Marathon we have been on the lookout for a new half to run.  Today I came across the perfect one; there’s beer, running and the beach….in New Hampshire…in February.

I know it’ll be a little cold for sun bathing but that’s okay we’re there to run and have an amazing time! Is anyone else running this or have you or do you want to?

Training for this half is going to start for me next week! I am sticking with the Galloway plan because I have been using it thus far and am loving it!

On another note I have a 10k on Saturday which I am debating about.  It was supposed to be in line with my original half marathon training but since Neil went and got himself injured (silly man) I got thrown off my training plan and I’m not sure if I am physically up to doing it.  I had a great 4 mile run this week and a quick and easy 2 mile run yesterday but I am not sure if I am ready to do 6.2 miles on Saturday.  I guess I’ll decide between now and 7am tomorrow.

Sports Bras

Now on to the good stuff sports bras! I have been working on finding various sports bras for giving me the right support for various activities.  When it comes to being active I lucked out that I’m not in need of something that is super supportive since ahem…there isn’t a ton to support.  I have tried a number of bras and I have a few favorites but my new addition is easily becoming a favorite of mine for a number of reasons.

For the past few weeks I have been trying out the Moving Comfort Rebound Racer Sports Bra and I am loving it and no you don’t get a photo of me in it so this one from their site will have to do.  My thoughts:

PROS

  • Excellent support
  • True to size
  • Well Made
  • Adjustable Straps (love this and you can use strap as a key holder if you’re like me)

CONS

  • Could use more colors- not that I’m flashing it around to other people but I’d like to see more variety than black, white and blue

BEST USES (based on my experience)

  • Running
  • Training
  • High Impact
Overall huge fan of this bra and would definitely recommend it!
